Introduction and approach

Former listener of the French radio station Skyrock and its show Radio Libre, I grew up listening to teenagers speak about sexuality, often for the first time. In these broadcasts, diapers sometimes appeared, in very varied forms, whether it was incontinence, games or fantasies.

Trigger warning: Revisiting these archives, I realized that some of the content had aged poorly. The aim of this text is not to judge these broadcasts, but to document them and reread them with hindsight, to revive moments that can still resonate, whether one is an ABDL member or not.

The show regularly featured a "problem of the month" segment. A selection of questions related to sexuality was submitted to listeners, who voted for the one they considered most relevant. The problem receiving the most votes was then explored in greater depth later in the show, with the participation of the person concerned.

In my recollection, Romano, one of the main presenters, said he enjoyed wearing diapers for fun, without explicitly mentioning ABDL (at least as far as I remember). So, I recently used the latest AI tools (OpenAI's Whisper) to find episodes where diapers were mentioned. Recent Skyrock archives can be found on their website or on YouTube via fans (from around 2016), but episodes before that time are harder to find.

Testimonies: Dominatrixes and prostitutes

In the first results that came out, I came across testimonies from sex workers and dominatrices who appeared on air to detail the specific requests of certain clients.
Among these practices, such as wearing diapers and sissification were discussed, implying that the client takes on a more childlike or feminine role. These passages make me smile, because it's a common fantasy for many ABDLs to link submission and diapers.

For example, in the episode of April 6, 2020, a domina talks about one of her clients who likes regression: wearing diapers, taking a bottle while leading a professional adult life outside of these sessions.

Teenagers suffering from bedwetting
Beyond kinky practices, the archives reveal a much more common facet: the daily lives of teenagers struggling with bedwetting. However, upon listening to these sequences again, one observation is clear: kindness was not always the order of the day and the person who displayed this kink was often treated like a real curiosity.
Topics related to diapers also appeared several times on the list of problems of the month (whether for genuine regression or domination), but this issue never gained a majority with the public., surprisingly…
Occasionally, kinks appear in the list of suggested topics, but they are rarely chosen as listeners prefer to talk about more conventional themes.

Romano and diapers: an unacknowledged ABDL ?

I had kept in the back of my mind a vivid memory of an episode where Romano recounted putting on a diaper and, above all, enjoying the sensations it gave him. It's THIS A memory that motivated my research. By sifting through this mass of excerpts, I finally found the evidence of what I suspected: Romano is familiar with diapers and appreciates a form of regression far more than one might think. It's a subject he often brings up, sometimes as a joke, sometimes even admitting to having worn them himself.

The segment is meant to be humorous, but the fact that this description is so specific within the BDSM world (cage, collar, etc.) leads me to believe that these ideas don't originate from a strictly "vanilla" imagination…

Other things to mention

In my research, I also came across other mentions of diapers, some more interesting than others: Japanese people wearing diapers during intense gaming sessions, comparisons of Tena commercials, references to an old monthly issue about a guy who liked wearing diapers (an episode I can't find anymore),… these appearances are brief and don't reveal much. However, there is one excerpt worth noting: in one of the episodes, the team discusses a woman who enjoys chewing used diapers. This conversation refers to a video of an American woman with an addiction to smelling and putting diapers in her mouth.

Even though I do not share this passion, I admire this woman's courage in speaking openly about her practice in public.

Conclusion

Listening again to these shows (some of which are very old, from 2001), I realized that the atmosphere in these shows was not so benevolent: when the topic of diapers is addressed, in particular the fact that adults may like to wear them for pleasure, there are many comments of incomprehension, some of which can be very denigrating.
I don't think the hosts are inherently malicious, but rather that these comments stem from a specific context: a group of guys/teenagers talking about sexuality. This judgmental attitude isn't limited to diapers or ABDL, but applies to any other relatively new practice. Judgment is also present when describing homosexual acts between men. The hosts have nothing against gay people, but if you ask them if they could imagine having sex with a man, the responses are along the lines of "it disgusts me.".

My opinion on all of this

In Romano's case, as he himself says, he seems to like diapers. However, I think that given his position as an influential public figure (with hundreds of thousands of listeners every night), he had no interest in openly admitting it or using the term ABDL. I'm not even sure he knew about it or if the term was known at the time. I haven't been able (yet) to find the episode where the forum for diaper enthusiasts (which I imagine is ABK) is mentioned.

Should we give Romano diapers?

In some episodes, Romano even gives us the radio studio's address so listeners can send him diapers. Maybe we could all chip in 😉?
